Anyone who was near the downtown Dover Saturday morning saw a large number of people with garden implements working away. It was Dover Pride Clean Up Day.
Residents of the Garrison City turned out in force from 8 a.m. to noon, spreading throughout the heart of the city raking, weeding, mulching and sweeping.
“This is a huge event,” said Amanda Gourgue, program director of sponsor Dover Main Street. “This is my first Dover Pride Day, and it is wonderful to see more than 300 people spread out building community.”
The Main Street organization joined with residents and the Community Services Department to put the spring shine on the downtown area.
The day started at the Mill Courtyard with a pancake breakfast by the Kiwanis for many participants after which they departed for their appointed stations.
Seen early on were more than 40 Dover High School students, members of the Rotary sponsored Interact Club, as well as representatives of the school’s National Honor Society.
DHS senior Caroline Kageleiry, who is Bryant College bound, has participated in the cleanup for several years.
“I’m here because I have lived all my life in Dover and it is only fair I do my share,” she said.
Friend Ali Lipinski added with a smile, “it always seems to be cold and rainy every year, but it doesn’t stop us. I like to help to make Dover pretty.”
